Officer Irvin Varney Dies

Irvin Benton Varney, 39, a 12-year veteran of the South San Francisco police force, died Wednesday after a long illness.

Varney, who moved to SSF from South Portland, Maine, in 1953, was most well known for solving the Natali murder case, in which a husband murdered his wife and daughter, in 1960.

“Irvin Varney was a great police office and a fine gentleman,” said SSF Police Chief John Fabbri. “He was a credit to our department and would have been a valuable aide to any city he might have worked for. We will miss him greatly.”

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his son, Roy, his brother, Robert of Derby, Vermont, his sister, Mrs. Eleanor Pult of Concord, Calif., and his mother, Mrs. Maud Varney of San Francisco.

Varney was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean conflict and a member of many fraternal and civic groups in the community.

He was a member of the Standish Masonic Lodge in Maine, the Square Club of San Francisco, the Municipal Motorcycle Officers of the State of California, the Peninsula Peace Officers Association, the City Employees of South San Francisco, the Boy Scouts of America, the Burlingame Bodies Scottish Rite and the National Rifleman Association.

Varney was also a past president of the Police Athletic League in South San Francisco, a past president of the SSF Rod and Gun Club and a member of the Associated Sportsmen of California.

Funeral services will take place tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at the Nauman and Lincoln Mortuary Chapel, 322 Maple Avenue. The services under the auspices of the Francis Drake Lodge, F&AM, 376, of SSF, will be conducted by Reverend Robert Lundy of St. Paul’s Methodist Church.

Interment will be at Golden Gate National Cemetery. Contributions for a scholarship fund for Roy Varney, his son, are preferred.
