Daly City’s Joe Sarto Dies in Coma

Joe Sarto, a long time Daly City resident and “Citizen of the Year” in 1960, died Tuesday after a long illness and several days in a coma. He was 75.

The popular sportsman, owner of the Villa Sanitarium, is survived by his wife, Violet, and a son, Joe Sarto Jr.

Sarto was a benefactor to young baseball players and sponsored several teams from Sacred Heart, St. Ignatius, Riordan and Lincoln High Schools over the past 11 years in year round semi-pro and sand-lot leagues.

He was an active sponsor in the American Legion baseball program also, and one year won the American Legion Award when his team won national ranking. Several of those players he started, such as Don Mossi, ended up playing professional baseball in the major and minor leagues.

In 1960, when he was honored as “Citizen of the Year,” the city had a day in his honor.

Consideration is being given in San Francisco’s sandlot diamonds after him.

Persons interested in a remembrance for him should send donations to Hanna Boys Center in Sonoma; St. Vincent’s Home for Boys or the Sister Mary Phillips Memorial Clinic.
