Mistaken Identity
Man Slain In Daly City Apt.
An apparent case of mistaken identity resulted Friday in the midnight slaying of s San Francisco man in a plush Daly City apartment.
David West, 25, of 810 Eddy St., S.F. was fatally shot in a scuffle with a man he mistakenly took for a rival to the affections of Carolyn Mitchell, of 655 Lake Merced Blvd.
According to police reports, when West visited Miss Mitchell last Friday night he found her in the company of her brother Allen Mitchell, 23, of 54 Rivera St.
Refusing to believe Mitchell was his girl friend’s brother, West reportedly accosted him and a struggle ensued. During the melee, Mitchell drew a .22 caliber derringer and fired pointblank at West, wounding him in both arms and the stomach.
The fatal bullet pierced the left arm and plunged into the abdomen.
West was rushed to Mary’s Help Hospital where he died at 4:25 a.m. Hospital sources expressed surprise at the death, since they at first considered the wound serious but not fatal.
Mitchell, booked on suspicion of murder, claimed self-defense, in that West allegedly attacked him.
His sister had been trying to call police at the time of the shooting.
