Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon from Daphne’s SF Funeral Service for Bradford Craig Stein, 14, who died June 12.

A student at Benjamin Franklin Intermediate School, Brad was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Stein and the brother of Mrs. Cessandra Ewers, David Ernest and Audrey Ann Stein.

Youth Dies in Beach Tragedy
Tunnel Collapse Kills 14 Year Old

A game with two boys playing on a sandy embankment along the beach ended in tragedy Monday evening when the tunnel they were building collapsed and killed one of them.

Dead is Bradley Stein of 94 Longview Drive, Daly City.

The 14-year-old youth, and Abraham Rivera, 13, of 84 Longview, were digging a tunnel from opposite ends when the accident occurred on the embankment near the Daly City-Pacifica boundary line, just south of Mussel Rock in Pacifica.

Abraham told Pacifica Police that he was looking down at Brad when all of a sudden he heard him scream and saw the cave come down on top of him.

He jumped down and tried to dig his friend out. When he pulled him out moments later, his face was covered with sand.

Abraham ran to get help and spotted Frank Gavbin of 123 Juanita standing beside a truck. Gavbin rushed to give the boy artificial resuscitation while Abraham went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Ensinger to phone the police.

Efforts by Gavbin, and later by Daly City firemen failed to bring any response. He was dead on arrival at Mary’s Help Hospital in Daly City.
