Local Man Dies in Car Crash

A Daly City man, Edward Thomas Reed, 51, 355 Park Plaza, was killed early Thursday just beyond the Daly City city limits when his car struck a steel guard rail and then slammed into a steel sign support on the Westlake turnoff.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at Mary’s Help Hospital. According to the California Highway Patrol, Reed died of multiple head and chest injuries.

Highway Patrolman L.F. Rollin estimated that Reed going southbound on the Junipero Serra Freeway, was traveling at about 65 miles per hour when he tried to make a late turn onto the Westlake exit off-ramp.

His car struck the curb at the north point of the divider which separates the off-ramp from the freeway lanes and careened into a guard rail which penetrated into the front seat of the auto. The car then became airborne and slammed into the steel sign support, the CHP reported.

Car parts were scattered all over the area after the second impact had ripped off the right side of the vehicle, including the steering assembly and engine, Rollin said.

Reed was a district manager for the Kelvinator Division, American Motors Corporation, in South San Francisco. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, and a daughter Susan, both of this city.

Another daughter lives in Los Angeles.
