W.C. Lasswell conducted funeral services last Friday morning for Arnold Chovin and his wife, Leona, who died suddenly in Daly City Nov. 21.

Mr. Chovin was the brother of Martha Chovin of France and the brother-in-law of Elvira Chovin of Oakland. Mrs. Chovin was the sister of Harry Raulet of Virginia, Paul Raulet of Georgia, and Agnes Coutier of Los Angeles.

Mr. and Mrs. Chovin were buried at the Chapel of Chimes in Oakland.

Old Couple Walks To Death

An elderly Daly City couple was struck down and killed in Westlake Tuesday night in a pre-holiday tragedy that hiked the city’s traffic fatality deaths to five this year.

Arnold Chovin, 81, 178 North Mayfair Avenue, and his 76 year old wife, Leona, were pronounced head on arrival at Mary’s Help Hospital after being hit by an auto at Alemany Avenue and Cliffside Drive around 4:30.

A daily mid-afternoon stroll that took the couple across Alemany was a familiar sight to neighboring residents, according to police reports.

Chovin and his wife had already crossed two east-bound traffic lanes, police said, and were continuing across the two westbound lanes when they were struck by a car driven by Ruth J. Spinosa, 36, 1556 Miranda Drive, Pacifica.

Both pedestrians were tossed 100 feet into the air when struck by the vehicle. Mrs. Chovin died instantly while Mercy Ambulance attendants fought in vain to save the husband’s lire enroute to Mary’s Help.

The driver of the auto told police the couple walked into the path of her car as she approached the intersection on a green traffic signal.

Police estimated that the Pacifica woman was heeding the 35 mile per hour speed limit when she struck the couple.

The theorize that a stopping lane used for making left turns onto Park Plaza Drive could have possibly obscured the couple’s vision as they walked into the path of the car.
