Columbia Park Boys Club strongly influenced my life and also the lives of two younger brothers. We fondly remember the Director, Mr. Julian P. Hargrove and Bill Maltby, the glee club administrator. We three brothers (Russ, Gary, & Denny Haddad)sang in the glee club and visited many different places e.g. Eastern Star, vet's hospitals, old folks homes, etc., mostly to spread some holiday cheer and song to older adults. Camp Peixoto in Mendocino Co. was before our time, but we did attend summer camps at Columbia Park Boys Camp near Groveland, CA many times. We participated in St. Patrick's Day parades, learned to play chess at the club, were involved in crafts, and played on the club basketball team. I was initiated one year into the Knights of the Redwoods as a Silver Knight at a very young age. My member name was "Sir Bugs" 'cause I was a butterfly collector. I served on the Jr. Staff with the kitchen crew one year and was awarded Camper of the year by the S.F. mayor. I was a Jr. counselor by then. My brother Gary also boxed for the club boxing team, even against his own school! I am 68 years old now, but still carry wonderful memories of the boys club. We were members back in the early '50s. Anyone wishing to share those times can reach me at russjhaddad@yahoo.com Thanks so much.
